Welcome NEW Zoo Director, Greg Bockheim
Cosley Zoo welcomes Greg Bockheim as our new Zoo Director, following the retirement of Susan Wahlgren.
Greg comes to us from the Virginia Zoological Park, where he served as Executive Director. His leadership there led to extensive expansions of animal habitats, conservation project involvement, creative regional partnerships, events, and enhanced visitor experiences. Prior to this, Greg has held leadership and animal husbandry roles at Potawatomi Zoo, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Birmingham Zoo, and Taronga Zoo.
With over 20 years dedicated to the zoo industry, Greg brings experience in zoo management, conservation, and animal well-being, with a proven track record at both large and small zoos across the country. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, he began his career as a teenager in animal care at his neighborhood zoo, John Ball Zoo, located in Grand Rapids.
“Experiences with animals are transformational for people of all ages, whether that animal be a goat, turtle, bunny, or rhino; each creates a deeper caring for living things which has never been more important,” said Greg.
Having started his zoo career at a community zoo and now returning to a community zoo is its own special reward. Greg and his wife Ann’s entire families live in Chicago and the Grand Rapids area. His daughter attends Michigan State University. “I have not lived this close to my family and close friends in a long long time, and that is simply thrilling.”
Reflecting on his diverse experience, Greg is excited to get to know the zoo team, foundation and park boards, supporters and community and is looking forward to start planning the future together.
