WHEATON – On Tuesday, October 21, the zoo welcomed two juvenile coyotes from a rehab center in California. The male is named River and the female is named Fern.

River was born approximately March 12 and Fern on April 5, so they are still youngsters. Like most coyotes, they are timid in a new environment with a lot of new people, smells, and sounds.

The front of their habitat is currently blocked off to provide the coyotes with a little privacy while they acclimate to their new home. They have been out exploring more and more, but when it is loud or very busy, they may retreat. This is normal behavior and one we encourage for all of our animals’ well being.

The are a bonded pair, and unrelated. Both were illegally in human care for an unknown amount of time before they were relinquished to the rehab center. They are imprinted, which means they associate their needs (food, water, shelter) with humans and cannot be safely released.

“We are so proud to be able to provide a home for these two individuals and share with our guests the impact people and animals have on one another,” said Angie Musselman, Animal Curator.
